Botanical  Tour  2011  –  A  Report

A Botanical study cum collection tour was organized ,during September 2011,by the  Department of Botany, The National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore 560 004 under the patronage of the Principal Dr.M.Leelavathi. She envisaged keen interest in the academic proceedings, trekked the forests, and visited every point of botanical interest almost simulating a sincere student of plant biology. Students of the V semester were guided on the tour by Dr.H.Gokul, Professor & Head, Department of Botany and Prof.D.E.Murthy Rao. The itinerary included an invited visit to the Botanical Garden, Calicut University, which includes a repository of more than 150 species of ‘Ornamental Gingers’, the Spice garden, Green House, Ginger Zone, Medicinal Plant House, Ginger House and Spices House. Dr.Sabu, Professor made elaborate arrangements facilitating the visit very academic. Dr.A.K.Pradeep,Professor of Botany in the Department rendered a demonstration –lecture on the Herbaria. Mr.Alfred,JRF-DST, accompanied the National College party all around the 5 acre- wonderfully maintained Botanical Garden, which has the reputation of being the ‘Best Maintained Botanical  Garden ’ in comparison with any University garden in Asia. Students had the opportunity to observe and study rare species such as Zamia, Gnetum and Victoria.       

The visit to the R&D institute of Arya Vaidya Shala -Centre for Medicinal Plants Research  ( CMPR)  at Kotakal was enriched by the explanation of  Dr.Suresh George and Dr.Sadashiva, Senior Scientists of the institute. Dr.A.B.Remashree, Sr.Scientist, Pharmacognosy gave a  PPT about the research activities of the TATA-DST-DBT-ICMR  funded, Dr Swaminathan - Dr.Abdul Kalam patronized research centre. Students & faculty were fortunate to watch the functioning of LC MS Facility (there are only two such facilities in India). Phytochemical analysis of Raw Drugs was demonstrated.

The visit to The Rappinat Herbarium at St.Joseph’s College,Tiruchirapalli was a very productive experience since its Director Fr.John Britto, personally explained about the Herbarium, herbarium techniques and the need to revitalize Plant Taxonomy. The Rappinat Herbarium has the worldwide reputation as an accredited herbarium recognized by Kew, London and the world Botanical Fraternity. The Director was personally impressed by the interest and interaction of the NCB students in plant taxonomy and even expressed his appreciation as

“Wish you were my students”

Enroute on this academic tour other places of visit included the Guruvayur Temple, Synagogue at Cochin, water ways of Alleppuzha, Tiruvanathapuram, Algae on the rocks at Kanyakumari, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial – Thiruvallavar statue, Madurai and Srirangam.

Thus it was a balanced combination of academic-nature exposure-spiritual and camaraderie journey to enrich the final year B.Sc life science students.

A tour report (technical-botanical) - 10 marks and herbarium submission- 10 marks forms a part of the approved syllabus of the autonomous course in B.Sc (CBZ) at NCB for the V semester practical examination.

The Department of Botany, NCB expresses its deep sense of gratitude to the Principal and Management, NES for the support and encouragement in this regard.

2 ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ 2011 ಗಾಂಧಿ ಜಯಂತಿ ಸಮಾರಂಭ

ಈ ವರ್ಷದ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಜಯಂತಿ ಸಮಾರಂಭವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ 9.15ಕ್ಕೆ ಡಾ. ಹೆಚ್.ಎನ್. ಮಲ್ಟಿಮೀಡಿಯಾ ಸಭಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ’ರಘುಪತಿ ರಾಘವ ರಾಜಾರಾಂ, ವೈಷ್ಣವ ಜನತೋ’ ಮುಂತಾದ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಎನ್.ಇ.ಎಸ್. ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಡಾ.ಎ.ಎಚ್.ರಾಮರಾವ್ ಅವರು ಸ್ವಾಗತ ಭಾಷಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ, ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ಡಾ.ಎಚ್.ಎನ್ ಅಂಥವರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಆದರ್ಶ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದರು. ಇಂದಿನ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಅತಿಥಿಗಳಾದ ಹಾನಗಲ್ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರಥಮದರ್ಜೆ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಪ್ರಾಂಶುಪಾಲರಾದ ಡಾ.ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರ ನಂಗಲಿ ಅವರು ’ಮಹಾತ್ಮ ಗಾಂಧಿಜಿ ಅವರ ಹಸಿರು ಕಾಳಜಿ’ ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, ನಿಸರ್ಗ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವನ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳು, ಮಾನವನ ಆಸೆಬುರುಕತನ ಮುಂತಾದವುಗಳನ್ನು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮನ ಮುಟ್ಟುವಂತೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಗಾಂಧಿ ಸ್ಟಡಿ ಸರ್ಕಲ್ ನ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಾತ್ಮಕ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿವಿಧ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಜೇತರಾದವರಿಗೆ ಬಹುಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ವಿತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಪ್ರಾಂಶುಪಾಲರಾದ ಡಾ. ಎಂ.ಲೀಲಾವತಿಯವರು ವಂದನಾರ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ನಮ್ಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ’ಗಾಂಧಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ’ ಎಂಬ  Add-on Courseನ ಸಂಚಾಲಕಿ ಡಾ. ಟಿ.ಪದ್ಮ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು.

ಕು. ವನಿತಾ ಸ್ಮಾರಕ 10ನೇ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಟ್ಟದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು, ಸೆ 24: ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಉಳಿವಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ  ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳು ಪೂರಕ ಎಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಡಾ.ನಲ್ಲೂರು ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದರು.
ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿಂದು ನಡೆದ ಕು. ವನಿತಾ ಸ್ಮಾರಕ 10ನೇ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಟ್ಟದ ಕನ್ನಡ  ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು,  ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆತ್ಮಸ್ಥೈರ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆ ಜಾಗೃತಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಕ್ರೀಡಾಪಟುಗಳಿಗೆ ಉನ್ನತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಉದ್ಯೋಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೀಸಲಾತಿ ಇರುವಂತೆಯೇ ಚರ್ಚೆ, ಭಾಷಣ, ಗಾಯನ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ  ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜಯ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದವರಿಗೆ ಕೂಡ ಮೀಸಲಾತಿ ನೀಡುವ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದರು.
 ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಂತನೆಯ ಗಣ ಮೈಗೂಡುತ್ತದೆ, ನಾಯಕತ್ವದ ಗುಣ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದರು. ಅಗಲಿದ ಪುತ್ರಿಯ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ ನಡೆಸಿ ಇಂದಿನ ಚರ್ಚಾಪಟುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಿರಿಯ ವಕೀಲ ಮಲ್ಲೇಶಯ್ಯ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲಾಘಿಸಿದರು.
ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ದೂರದರ್ಶನ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಸುದ್ದಿ ವಿಭಾಗದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಎಸ್.ಜಿ. ರವೀಂದ್ರ, ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಉಪ ಪ್ರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಾದ ಪ್ರಮೋದ್ ಮುತಾಲಿಕ್ ಮೊದಲಾದವರು ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳಿಂದ ಆಗಮಿಸಿದ್ದ 80 ಕಾಲೇಜುಗಳ 164 ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಗಳು ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿಪೂರ್ವ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಪಾರಿತೋಷಕವನ್ನು ರೂರಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಕನಕಪುರ    ಹಾಗೂ ಪದವಿ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಪಾರಿತೋಷಕವನ್ನು ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಪದವಿ ಕಾಲೇಜು ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಪಡೆದರು.
ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಎಜ್ಯುಕೇಷನ್ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಡಾ.ಎ.ಎಚ್. ರಾಮರಾವ್ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪ್ರದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ಸದ್ಗುರು ಸಾಯಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥ ಪ್ರಭಾಕರರೆಡ್ಡಿಯವರು, ಹಾಗು ನಮ್ಮ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಸಮಾಜಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಮೌಳೇಶ್ ಅವರು, ಪದವಿಪೂರ್ವ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಉಪ ಪ್ರಾಂಶುಪಾಲರಾದ ಡಾ.ಎಂ.ಕೆ.ಶ್ರೀಧರ್ ಅವರು  ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತರಿದ್ದರು.

I DEGREE INAUGURATION

Inauguration of I Degree Classess was held on 1 July 2011 at Gandhi Nehru Rangamandira of the College. Dr.M.S.Thimmappa, former Vice-Chancellor of the Bangalore University was the Chief Guest. Sri D.N.Anand, Acting President of N.ES Presided. Prof. S.N.Nagaraja Reddy, Hon. Secretary, NES and Dr.C.V.Venkatachallan Member of the Governing Council graced the occasion.

New PG Course introduced

We are happy to introduce 

M.A. Course in SOCIOLOGY 

from this academic year 2011-12.

This new Masters degree has been designed to reflect current developments in the field. The course provides the opportunity for you to advance your knowledge of sociological theory and explore the debates at the forefront of the discipline, as well as receiving research methods training.

Objectives:

• Develop critical skills and advance your knowledge of Sociology.

• Explore key issues and debates with a focus on social inequalities and current social issues. 

• Develop an understanding of a wide range of global issues. 

• Opportunity to learn Research Techniques and apply them to present a dissertation on a chosen current social issue. 

• Learn from expert & experienced staff with specialisms in the study of disaster, gender and other subaltern social categories.

Eligibility:

1)   A candidate who has passed the three year B.A. Examination of any recognized University or equivalent thereto with Sociology as one of the core subjects, shall be eligible for admission to M.A. course in Sociology.

2)   A General merit candidate should have secured at least 50% marks in aggregate and 55% in Sociology in the degree course. For candidates belonging to SC/St/BT and OBC, it is relaxed to 45% both in aggregate marks and marks secured in Sociology.

The Red Ribbon Club Activity

THE RED RIBBON CLUB

On Saturday, 26th of March 2011 a programme was organized under the banner of “THE RED RIBBON CLUB” this was in joint collaboration with the NSS wing of National Degree College.

The main aim of this club is to create awareness about the unfortunately omnipresent HIV and AIDS. This club was started in 2010,by the under this banner many programmes have been conducted which include lectures, seminars and street plays wherein the students enact a play concerned with AIDS on the streets to guide the general public.

On Saturday, 26th of March 201 an interactive programme was conducted by Mrs. Asha Rammaiya,member of THE POSITIVES SOCIETY, in the presence of  the president of the function, Dr M.Leelavathi, Principal, and Dr C B Annapoornamma,NSS co-ordinator,NDC,and other professors, the students and the NSS volunteers.

The speaker spoke eloquently about HIV, how it spreads, and what are its measures to control. The main highlight of the programme was when the speaker shared her experiences about how she had to face her family, society and mainly her own self. It was a wonder for the gathering to know that though being a positive she had no traces of depression in her life. She was an inspiration to one and all present in the gathering. The students were so moved by her bitter experiences of life that some students started crying.
